We’re Expanding

Thirty one years ago in 1988, our founder Mr. Eddie, opened up Edcon, Inc. in an old general store in Peak, SC. Within the first six years of being open, we outgrew our original space, and added a second floor to our building to house our growing company. Our location in the old general store remained the perfect space for us for nearly three decades!

Now, we’re expanding across Mulberry Street into an old house to have more office space and room for our growing team. You don’t need to worry—we’re still operating out of our original location! We’re just adding some additional square footage so that we can continue to serve our clients well.

As you can tell from our original location, it’s important to our team to honor the history and legacy of any building that we work in. You’ll find small details here and there in our new space that have historical elements to them.

One thing that we’re super excited about? These custom, handblown glass pendant lights in the perfect shade of our favorite color. They were locally made at One Eared Cow Glass in downtown Columbia!

We can’t wait to show you the finished space once we have it completed! Be sure to check our social media out for progress updates as we continue make this space our own

Progress in Lugoff/Elgin

It’s been a busy spring for us in the Midlands! Just up the road from our home office in Peak, South Carolina, we’ve been busy working on several schools in the Kershaw County School District. The three schools—Doby’s Mill Elementary School, Leslie Stover Middle School, and Lugoff-Elgin Middle School—are all schools that required some renovation work as well as new additions.

Take a look at the progress that has been made at each of these schools. We’re looking forward to completing them later this year!

A Year In Review

As the year quickly begins to wind down, we’re taking a moment today to look back on all of the projects our team has worked on together this year. 2018 was a busy year for us!

Our team completed the work on five big projects ranging from an elementary school to a building on a college campus. Each project was the culmination of months of hard work from our team and we’re proud of the way that each one turned out in the end. They were exceptional projects to work on!

Central Carolina Technical College

Van Wyck Elementary School

Keenan High School Football Stadium

Midway Elementary School Window and HVAC Replacement

Oak Grove Elementary Elevator Addition

We were also busy making progress on other job sites around the state as we work to build a new recreation complex and as we complete renovations and additions on existing schools. 2019 will be a busy year for us as we continue to work on:

Orangeburg Recreation Complex

Rosemary Elementary School

Andrews High School

Leslie Stover Middle School Additions?

Lugoff-Elgin Middle School Additions

Doby’s Mill Elementary School Additions

Summerville High School CATE (Phase 2)

New Darlington Area Elementary School

Throughout the year, we’ve also had plenty of celebrations and fun with our team.

In March, we welcomed our new Assistant Project Manager, JT, to the team. He’s been a welcome addition as he’s made an immediate impact on our team—we’re glad to have him on board!

In April, our team participated in the True to the Brew Trail Run along the Peak to Prosperty Passage. Josh, Kevina, Bart, and Mrs. Karen all completed the 10K trailcourse that ended right outside of our front door.

In May, we celebrated our 30th Anniversary with a celebration at Mr. & Mrs. Edwards’s home.

In the fall, both JT and Kevina passed their certification exams to become LEED APCertified.

Our 30th year in business was a wonderful year! Our entire team is excited to ring in the New Year and to see what 2019 holds in store for us. We know it’s going to be another fantastic year for Edcon and we can’t wait to dive into it.

Thankful

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, our team took a moment to reflect on all of the things that we’re thankful for this season. All of us at Edcon are extremely grateful for the thirty years that we’ve had working in the construction industry. Since 1988, we have been fortunate to work with some incredible school districts and businesses on both new construction and renovation projects.

We’ve also had the opportunity to work with some great people throughout the years. From our team members to our subcontractors, and everyone in between, we’re glad that our paths have crossed with so many different people in the industry. What are some of our team members most thankful for this Thanksgiving?

“I am thankful to work for a company that sees the value in me and continues to support me in all my endeavors. From studying for my LEED AP to being a first time mom, I am thankful for all of the support I have gotten from my family at Edcon, Inc.” – Kevina, Safety Coordinator & Administrative Assistant

“This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for a wonderful wife and a family who supports me. I’m thankful for all of the wonderful things God does for me, and how he watches over me and my family.” – Bart, Project Manager

“I am thankful for a wonderful and supportive husband, great family, good health, and the privilege to work for a wonderful company.” Mrs. Karen, Controller

“I’m thankful for the subcontractors and suppliers that we deal with on a daily basis who help ensure our success on each project.” – Josh, Project Manager

From each of us here at Edcon, we hope that you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Lancaster County School District’s Newest Elementary School

In August, Lancaster County School District in South Carolina opened the doors of their new elementary School, Van Wyck Elementary, for the first time to welcome teachers, students, staff, and parents to a new school year in a brand new building.

It was our pleasure to complete the construction of Van Wyck Elementary. The new school has a total of 105,000 square feet and includes 52 classrooms, a media center, a multipurpose room, an art room, a computer lab, and more. At the beginning of the school year, 650 students were enrolled but the school has a capacity for 1,100 students. The size of the school is more than enough for their currently student body, but allows for plenty of growth throughout the years to come.

One of our team’s favorite features of the new school is all of the natural light that enters into the building. There is natural light in the hallways and the classrooms, and everywhere in between. We also love all of the bold, bright colors that they chose to use throughout the school.

Congratulations on your new school, Van Wyck Eagles! We hope that you enjoy your new school every bit as much as we enjoyed building it for you. Have a great school year!

Keenan High School’s New Football Stadium

We are proud to announce the completion of the new football stadium at Keenan High School in Columbia, South Carolina. This project, begun in late 2017, was completed 10 months later in August 2018.

The ground breaking was held at the end of the high school football season in November 2017. Our ground breaking was made extra special with the help from the players from the Keenan High School football team

Our Edcon team completed the construction of home and visitor concessions, a field house with locker rooms and training rooms for each team, a press box, and storage building. The stadium now seats 5,000 people and is the home field for two different high schools in the district—Keenan High School and Eau Claire High School.

This was such a fantastic project to work on and we enjoyed working with the school and the district to construct this wonderful new stadium. We know that the players and coaches love it—in the Keenan Raiders’ first game in their new stadium, they brought home the first victory in the stadium with a win over C.A. Johnson 34-6! Congratulations, guys!

Join Our Team

We are excited to announce that our Edcon team is growing and that we’re searching for an experienced Construction Superintendent to join our team! Our company, Edcon Inc, is a family-owned commercial general contractor that has spent the past thirty years constructing K-12 educational facilities projects all across the state of South Carolina. As we look towards our future, we are looking to add an additional Construction Superintendent to our team to help us continue to provide exceptional facilities for each school district that we work for.

Interested in joining our team? We would love to hear from you! Please email your cover letter and résumé to Josh Edwards at josh@edconinc.com.

30th Anniversary

“It’s our 30th, but that’s just a place in time. It could be our 20th, 30th, or 40th. I think we’re just taking a pause to thank everybody here for what they do and what they do for us. We appreciate what you have done through the years. Because of this business, our paths have crossed, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

We take these wise words from our owner, Mr. Eddie Edwards’ toast from our 30th anniversary celebration to heart here at Edcon. Anniversaries are truly just a place in time—but it’s the people and businesses that we are fortunate enough to work for and with that make what we do truly rewarding.

Edcon, Inc was founded on June 1, 1988 and we celebrated our 30th Anniversary last week with a grand party at Mr. & Mrs. Edwards home in Chapin, SC. It was wonderful to see people that we have worked with throughout the last three decades come to celebrate this milestone with us. We are grateful to be able to work with so many incredible people that have become more like family to us than just people that we work with. Our team enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with everyone throughout the evening as we all reminisced about years past and the memories that we all share.

Take a look at some of the fun that we had

We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped us get to this momentous occasion:

Mr. Eddie Edwards, for founding such an incredible company 30 years ago

Our Edcon Family, for always working hard towards the same goal

Our vendors & contractors, for working together with us to build great schools

Our community, for allowing us to build facilities to educate your children in

It was a wonderful evening and we enjoyed celebrating 30 years with everyone! Here’s to the next 30 years—may they be as successful and prosperous as the first 30 were!

True to the Brew Trail Run Race Recap

There are many things that we love about working out of our office in the small town of Peak, South Carolina, but one of our favorite things is that we can walk out of our front screen door, across the street, and directly onto the Palmetto Trail.

The Palmetto Trail is a project created by Palmetto Conservation and when complete, will be a 500 mile long trail from Walhalla in the Blue Ridge Mountains to Awendaw on the Intracoastal Waterway. Established in 1994, there are currently 350 miles of the trail complete with 150 more to go. The trail includes backcountry, rails-to-trail, greenways, city sidewalks, urban bikeways, steps of the State Capital, Bridle, and absolutely nothing motorized. It connects state and county parks, national forests, nature preserves, wildlife management areas, Revolutionary War battlefields, Native American Paths, and much more.

We’re fortunate enough to be right along the Peak to Prosperity Passage, a 10.8 mile section of the Palmetto Trail. Along the passage, you can find 14 wooden trestles including the impressive Broad River Trestle. We love that the Broad River Trestle is right across the street from us! The views from this trestle are incredible and being able to take a quick break during the day out here is great.

Last week, not only did our team participate in the True to the Brew Trail Run along the Peak to Prosperity Passage but our company was one of the sponsors of the event. We are proud to have helped raise significant funds in this inaugural race for Palmetto Conservation! Take a look at the fun day that we had out on the trails in this 6.5 mile trail run / hike.

Thanks to GRIT Endurance, Palmetto Conservation, Outspokin’ Bicycles, and Craft and Draft for putting together a wonderful event! We’re already looking forward to participating in this race again next year.

February Updates

It has been another busy month for us at Edcon! This month, we officially broke ground on a new recreation complex in Orangeburg, SC. The City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Department’s newest recreation complex will be built off of North Road and is expected to open in about 18 months in the fall of 2019. The complex will include:

Two clusters of baseball and softball fields for a total of 9 ballfields

Restrooms

Concession stands

Press boxes

Meeting Rooms

The ground breaking was attended by Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler, the Orangeburg City Council, and our own project manager for the recreation park, Josh Edwards.

“The City of Orangeburg selected a beautiful site for this new project,” Josh said. “This 70 acre tract is surrounded by woods on all sides and has two ponds on site. I love the amount of green space and walking trails that are being incorporated—this park will be far more than a baseball and softball facility. The finished product will be one that has year-round use for all residents in the Orangeburg community.”

We also participated in and attended the South Carolina School Board Association Convention on Hilton Head Island this month. This is an annual convention that we look forward to attending each year and it was another wonderful event this year. We loved seeing so many familiar faces and friends as we enjoyed good food and conversation together.

Congratulations to Don Kennedy of Spartanburg County School District 3! He stopped by our booth at the convention, entered into our raffle, and won a Yeti bag cooler.
